Have you ever heard of the Military Order of the Devil Dogs? If not, don’t worry; you’re not alone. This organization maintains a low profile, but its mission and values are truly remarkable. Today, we’ll delve into the world of the Devil Dogs and explore what makes this group so unique.
Who Are the Devil Dogs?
The Military Order of the Devil Dogs (MODD) is an exclusive and prestigious organization deeply rooted in the traditions and camaraderie of the United States Marine Corps. Founded in 1939, the Marine Corps League is a nonprofit organization dedicated to community service and assisting veterans.
What’s in a Name?
You might be wondering about the name, “Devil Dogs.” This nickname has historical significance. During World War I, German soldiers referred to the U.S. Marines as “Teufel Hunden” (Devil Dogs) because of their fierce tenacity in battle. The Marines embraced this nickname, and it has since become a symbol of pride and strength for the Corps.
Membership
Becoming a member of the MODD is no small feat. It’s an exclusive organization, and its members are proud to be part of a distinguished brotherhood & sisterhood. To become a “Devil Dog,” one must first be a member of the Marine Corps League as a Regular member for at least 1 year.
Their Mission
The Devil Dogs are deeply committed to supporting the Marine Corps League and its charitable endeavors. The top priority is to fundraise and assist with children’s organizations and youth groups. They raise funds, get involved with Toys-for-Tots, provide assistance to veterans, and engage in various community service activities. Their dedication to helping veterans and their families reflects the Marine Corps’ ethos of service to the nation.
The Fun and Camaraderie at Growl Meetings
One of the most cherished aspects of being a member of the MODD is the opportunity to attend “Growl Meetings.” These gatherings are more than just formal events; they are lively, spirited events filled with camaraderie and fun. A Growl Meeting is a traditional gathering of Devil Dogs. It’s an occasion to come together, relax, and enjoy each other’s company in a casual and convivial atmosphere. These meetings are usually held at local “Pounds” (chapter) and are characterized by their informality and good-natured spirit.
Laughter and Fellowship
At Growl Meetings, members share stories, jokes, and anecdotes, often accompanied by hearty laughter. It’s a time for Devil Dogs to let loose and enjoy the company of like-minded individuals who share a deep respect for the Marine Corps and its values. The atmosphere is often described as warm, welcoming, and full of brotherhood and sisterhood.
Honoring Traditions
While there is plenty of laughter and camaraderie, Growl Meetings also incorporate meaningful traditions and rituals. These can include toasting fallen comrades, recognizing outstanding members, and reinforcing the Marine Corps’ core values. This balance of tradition and lightheartedness adds depth and significance to the gatherings.
Supporting Charitable Initiatives
Growl Meetings often serve a dual purpose: fostering camaraderie and raising funds for charitable initiatives. Members might engage in activities like raffles, auctions, or other fundraising efforts during these meetings. Knowing that they are having fun while also contributing to a worthy cause adds a sense of fulfillment to the festivities.
Local Pounds
There are 2 Pounds in the local area:
- Ventura County Pound 325 is located in Simi Valley.
- Los Angeles County Pound 389 is located in East LA.
The MODD isn’t just about solemn commitments and charity work; it’s also about having a good time and enjoying the camaraderie of fellow Marines and supporters. Growl Meetings are a testament to the organization’s ability to balance the serious aspects of its mission with the joy of shared experiences and laughter. These gatherings make being a Devil Dog not only a meaningful commitment but also a whole lot of fun.
